I have to travel 5km a day to my office but occasionally around 180km. I want a car within a Rs 10 lakh budget with comfortable travel being a priority. Should I go in for a petrol or a diesel-engined car?

For occasional long-distance use, it’s not worth going in for a petrol-engined car. For your budget, go in for the Honda City. It’s a good office commuter, quite comfortable and very reliable too. Its fuel efficiency is very impressive. Hence the car won’t guzzle fuel on your longer trips.

I wish to upgrade to an SUV, and would like you to suggest which is a better car overall — Innova, Tavera, Scorpio and the Xylo — with regards to comfort on long drives, mileage and low maintenance cost. I want to go for the Xylo but will like an expert opinion.

The Xylo is spacious and easy to drive, but its soft springs tend to make it a tad uncomfortable on long journeys — with all that body movement. The Innova is still the king of comfort, but the Xylo feels more powerful and will have a lower maintenance cost in comparison.

The Hyundai i10 automatic-transmission is the right car for you. You will not have problems with regard to legroom and the car returns respectable fuel economy figures of 9kpl in the city.
