India has offered American Patricia Carlin many avenues to discover, both at work and on the personal front
CATCHING UP India’s diverse culture is a great learning experience, says Patricia
The only thing Patricia Carlin misses in Bangalore is driving her own car in the city. “I am used to driving on the other side of the road and dealing with massive traffic. It can be quite a wild experience. I can get most of the items that I get back home in market places across the city, so I do not miss anything else in particular,” says American Patricia Carlin, General Manager of Thoughtworks, an IT consultancy firm.
Before taking up a job in India in July this year, Patricia had vacationed in India many times. She says: “I always enjoyed my trips to India. I was in love with the vibrancy, the diversity that set this country apart from others. When I was offered the job, I decided to take it up immediately.” But there was some apprehension.
“I was a bit worried about the reception I would get, whether I would be able to manage a team with more than 250 people. However, I felt at home once I joined and have enjoyed the experience a great deal.”
Patricia feels that India has been a great learning experience for her, both at a professional and personal level. “I have learnt a lot from my colleagues. It has been very different from my job in the US. The workplace is younger, vibrant and great fun.”
She has also become a fan of Indian food does not mind spicy food. “I enjoy eating spicy food a lot. Indian cuisine is one of my personal favourites.”
“On the personal front, I feel that I have begun to understand more about the many diverse cultures of the country. I have travelled across the country on vacation and work….More

The Hindu : y>Kalaripayattu is not only a great stress buster but it also gives women a sense of empowerment, say Geethi and Hema to SHILPA SEBASTIAN R.
Photo: Sampath Kumar g.p.DETERMINED Kalari is also about breaking norms, and means strength and liberation to the duo
They come from different cities – Hema Sundari is from Bangalore and Geethi K.B. is from Kerala. What they have in common is their passion — kalaripayattu. They are on a mission to make it big in this male dominated art form.
Hema started as a classical dancer. “I was into dance for 15 years and decided to try something more physically challenging. Got into contemporary dancing at Attakalari, where Dil Sagar was my teacher and that’s where I was introduced to kalari. Bharatantaya is a dance form, while kalari is more like combat.”
Geethi started with kalari at the age of six. “My parents were keen that I learn it.” Later she went to learn kathak in Nasik and says: “As I grew into a woman, I started travelling and exploring life. It became difficult because of the unjust social norms that every woman has to deal with. Some negative elements had to be dealt with physically. That’s when I decided to go back to kalari, just to protect myself. You don’t need to learnkalari for years; just five moves in a short while is enough to protect you in daily life too. I believe self defence is also about self responsibility. If I can’t help myself how can I help others?” asks Geethi, who recalls an incident where kalari came in handy. “I was watching a film and there was this slimy hand that crept towards me from behind. I did not scream. I just held the hand and twisted it with all my strength and kept it that way till the movie ended. By the end his hand was…More

A popular Spanish dish, similar to the French ratatouille. Pisto is made with onions, tomatoes, green peppers, courgettes and olive oil. It can be eaten as a side dish (served warm with bread and a fried egg) or also served cold with a salad. The dish is often called Pisto Manchego because of its origins in the La Mancha region. It is also used as a filling for empanadillas and empanadas.
