Season’s special

The Hindu :

Monsoon is here, and there is an entire range of footwear waiting to adorn pretty feet

Photo: Vino JohnDRESS IT UP Wear it the right way

Now that the monsoon is here, most of us wouldn’t risk bringing out our favourite pair of leather shoes or our suede sandals. But you needn’t let the rains dampen your spirit. And nobody says you must don sloppy gumboots or wear boring chappals to work. Monsoon footwear, this year is about feeling comfortable and being stylish at the same time and there is a host of options for you.

If it is casual footwear that you prefer, go in for a pretty pair of flip flops. They’re usually made of rubber so they don’t stay wet for long. The colours that are favourite picks of the season include shocking pink, bright orange, navy blue and of course nobody can ignore brown flip flops. You even get flip flops that come with different funky prints on them. They also happen to be the most economical option for the monsoons.

Leather boots are an absolute no-no. However, men could opt for mild leather or patent leather boots that can be cleaned with a moist cloth. Women could try out lycra boots. Black, brown, beige and red are in vogue, as always.

Floaters are a decent option because they are sturdy and provide good grip and they do not absorb water allowing your feet to dry faster. Big brands offer you the best of floaters. Mules and rubber slippers work well for a casual day. They are non fussy, lightweight and come in a wide range of colours. You could go bling or sober depending on your mood! Puma has even come out with water resistant, odourless monsoon footwear. Ballet flats in synthetic materials or rubber can also be taken into consideration.

For those of you who would still swearby the shoe,…More

Doing chicken right

The Hindu : SHONALI MUTHALALY

Dig deep into the chicken bucket as KFC opens Chennai’s fifth and the country’s 50th outlet here

How trendy is a burger? Well, that really depends on which part of the world you’re in.

In America, as in many other parts of the world, fast-food’s far from glamorous. After all, it’s usually accompanied by fluorescent lighting, luridly coloured Formica tables andindifferent service.

Not in India though. Over here burgers, fries and chicken legs have managed to sneak into our wildly eclectic ‘fine dining’ category.

Fast-food restaurants here are smart, and set up in posh parts of the city. The only grunge they see comes with designer labels attached, on drawling hipsters yearning for Hollywood lives.

No matter how much Indians travel, or how many of them have degrees from fancy foreign universities, or how familiar they are with fast-food outlets across the world, our perception of outlets such asKFC, McDonald’s and Pizza Hut has not changed.

We think burgers wrapped in crinkly paper and served up with sachets of tomato sauce simply epitomise cool. Let’s not be snotty about this. It’s quite logical actually. For one, unlike the rest of the world, burgers are practically exotic here because the big chains began entering the Indian market so recently. Till then, you had to go abroad to eat a Happy Meal.

Indians who lived and travelled abroad came home craving these burgers and milkshakes, so distinctly different from the ones made in India. We still get misty-eyed about food chains that haven’t opened here yet.

How many of you have been dreaming of Starbucks? Or Taco Bell? Or Dunkin Doughnuts? Yesterday, I was at a party and someone brought up Krispy Kream. Suddenly there were squeals of excitement as everyone talked about their first taste of the deliciously melty doughnut. I discovered the brand at the…More
