The Hindu :
Laura Parkin has discovered an India off the tourist map
INDIANISEDLaura Parkin
When she moved to India seven years ago, air travellers on the Hong Kong-Mumbai route were amused at Laura Parkin’s hand baggage, stuffed with Chinese spices and a host of international foods that were not available in India. Seven years on, Laura loves Indian food and also finds her ingredients at her neighbourhood supermarket. She quips, “I have always liked Indian food. With food from every corner of the world easily available, I do not need to go grocery shopping in Hong Kong anymore.”
Laura is a citizen of the world and has lived in Hong Kong, Moscow, San Francisco and other cities across the world. She is currently the Executive Director of the Wadhwani Foundation and co-founder of the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), the foundation’s key programme.
She says, “Bangalore is fast becoming a cosmopolitan city, much like Hong Kong or New York. Though it has been growing at exponential speed, it has managed to keep its traditions and retains the old-world feel to a great extent.”
She adds, “Being part of the non-profit sector, I feel that I have learnt and understood more about this country. I go on a lot of official tours, which take me to places that may not be on tourist itineraries. India is a beautiful and diverse country with friendly people.”
Over the years, Laura feels she and her family have become Indianised. “During trips to the United States, my four-year-old daughter does not have any American food. I have to shop and whip up instant dal-chawal, though I am a novice at cooking Indian food.”
“The vibrancy and sheer diversity that the country offers amazes me. I have travelled in south India and have also visited many places in Rajasthan. I have lived in Mumbai for three years and have enjoyed it too.”

The Hindu :
The Sakhi Craft Carnival showed a thing or two that can be achieved by fusion of traditional crafts with modern ideas
YARDS OF CREATIVITY And oodles of charm
The sensual elegance of a sari draped on an Indian woman is an undisputable fact. And every State across the length and breath of the country boasts of its own particular tradition and variety. Yet, at Sakhi’s in Indiranagar, the 5.5 yards have been given a modern twist while plumbing the depths of traditional embroidery styles, giving dying art forms a revival with a contemporary feel.
At the ongoing Sakhi Craft Carnival being held at the store in Indiranagar, artisans showcase their traditional art forms, which, Chandra the owner of Sakhi, has fused with modernity.
Every sari is a veritable piece of art. A Kalamkari artisan stood drawing motifs that captured the essence of ancient architectural monuments and scenes from the epics. “There are 17 steps to the art with the use of natural dyes and the final immersion in milk, which gives it its final glossiness,” explains Chandra, while we watch the artisan freehand draw a dancing Kalpana.Elaborate work
“Cut work is another speciality of ours,” said Chandra, “and we use it elaborately on pallus and borders. We also have unique combinations of cut work on traditional Kanchivaram saris.”
A block-printer showed off his art as well. Sakhi has used his skills, combining modern graphic designs with traditional Indian motifs.
“We have a variety of block prints on chiffons, crepes, georgettes, tussars and Kanchivarams,” explained Neeta, runs Sakhi with her mother.
A fashion show with models displaying a part of Sakhi’s collection was featured. Models displayed saris with Kalamkari work on a variety of fabrics in earthy blacks, tans and reds.
An ecru coloured tussar, with thick cutwork across the pallu and along the base of the pleats in spring colours of fresh green and pink…More

The Hindu :
Head to White Tiger for a spectacular view and great food
HUGE SPREADClassic cocktails, Italian food and much more
It was the name that drew us to Kammanahalli, to check out the latest watering hole in town. And White Tiger the new lounge bar and restaurant, with its black leather and wood interiors did not disappoint. Barely a month old, it is already drawing in a steady clientele and is full even during the week.
The bar is impressive, spread across the width of the room and Shankar the barman juggles, dances, and flares to whip up excitement among the guests. “I cut my teeth working in ‘Cocktails and Dreams’ in Baga, Goa,” reveals Shankar. “My “Masala Martini” is a great crowd favourite,” says Shankar, but I tried a really ‘hot’ pink mock-tail called ‘Shanks’ while my companion had a Kingfisher beer. A plate of golden French Fries with strips of bacon garnished with melted cheese is a must have as a starter.
For a French fry addict, not all French fries pass the test, but these did! They taste best, dunked in thick mayo sauce which comes as accompaniment. Their Panino or Italian grilled sandwiches, filled with meats, mushrooms, tomatoes and smothered with cheese, are also great value for money.
The lounge is divided into three segments. But what seems to be the most popular is the open air terrace which looks out onto a spectacular view from the fourth floor. Bar stools are placed along the entire terrace wall, facing the view and especially once the sun goes down and a breeze picks up, it’s a great place to be in to relax and unwind. George who flies with British Air, has brought in fabulous posters from London and an iconic Bob Marley poster greets you as you step onto the terrace.
Italian cuisine is a personal favourite, so we ordered chicken Bolognese for…More
