The Hindu : y>RJ Anjaan sees himself as an entertainer and tells NIKHIL VARMA the medium doesn’t matter
It is very encouraging that private radio hit towns in India, when the death of radio was being predicted
Photo : Bhagya Prakash K.TRUE IMAGE RJ Anjaan: ‘You can afford to be yourself on radio’
When he was in college, RJ Anjaan used to present small radio shows and do some theatre. “I see myself as a communicator, who can entertain people as well. The medium does not matter to me much, as long as I manage to do my job well. Radio has been fun and I love it,” says the RJ and programme manager at Radio One.
He was currently in the news as one of the finalists for the “Best job in the world”, a job that involved managing a tropical island in the South Pacific, He was was short listed from nearly 20,000 applicants.
“It was a tremendous experience. The finalists were from varied backgrounds, pursuing different jobs, but sharing many similarities including a love for nature and adventure.” Anjaan is not very unhappy at not being selected for the job. “If I was selected, it would have been more of a vacation than a job. I have the best job in the world already,” he quips.
Talking of the recent attacks on Indian students in Australia, Anjaan says: “Some of these attacks may be racial, but you cannot generalise the behaviour of a few thugs as the character of a country. The Australians I met were fun, relaxed and extremely friendly. Many of them are as concerned about these crimes.” He adds, “It is a country that manages to combine natural beauty with a vacation atmosphere.”Making of a true RJ
He feels that an RJ should have the capability to hold the interest of an audience and must be able to articulate his point of view forcefully….More

Bend, swing and loop. It’s not an aerobics class but Chef Hardy Cheung from Hong Kong demonstrating how dough can be made into noodles
PHOTO: R. SHIVAJI RAOPulling noodles Gives Chef Hardy oodles of delight
Bend. And loop. And swing. Then bend. And loop… But don’t get out your bright pink leotards and Flashdance soundtrack just yet. This might sound like one of those exasperatingly peppy Jane Fonda workout videos. But, the skinny on all this bending, and looping, and did we mention swinging, is that this is the only way to get a bowl of perfectly supple, beautifully textured, fresh handmade noodles.
Not that it’s just a question of dough aerobics. The process of turning a pile of flour into a profusion of delicate stretchy noodles requires so much training, dedication and dexterity that, apparently, even in China — home of the hand pulled noodle — only about 400-500 people can actually do it.
Fortunately, Chef Hardy Cheung, who offers to give us a demonstration, is one of them.
Hardy, who began cooking at the age of 12, thanks to his mother who always wanted him to become a Chef, began work in The Beijing Restaurant in Hong Kong. Then, like all ambitious Chefs, he travelled, learning different Chinese food styles from various master Chefs along the way. He worked his way through Schezwan cooking, dim sums and Chinese barbeque in the Philippines, Indonesia and Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai as a Dim Sum Chef. He worked in Luxemburg, Belgium, Holland, France and Germany and eventually returned to India as the chef of Golden Dragon, Taj Coromandel, Chennai in 1995. Today, he’s working in Hong Kong again, though he’s currently orchestrating a food festival in Chennai, at Chin Chin, the Chinese restaurant at The Residency Hotel.Fresh and chewy
Along the way, in Hong Kong, Chef Hardy learned how to make these noodles….More

An exhibition of paintings of Mother Teresa by Ritu Singh begins on July 21 at Renaissance Gallery, Cunningham Road. The show, organised by Stella 99, a Kolkata-based event management, is on till July 25. The exhibition will later travel to other metros in the country and then abroad.
As Kolkata is in the process of celebrating Mother’s 100th year, this “art walk” is our way to pay our homage to Mother, say the organisers. Ritu is said to be the one of the first to paint Mother Teresa. This year is her Golden Jubilee and 50th year of association with Mother and has painted the Mother from the last 50 years. Her paintings have been displayed on BBC and also featured in the document films made on Mother Teresa, which was aired at Cannes. She also has the original signature of Mother Teresa with her good wishes, on some of her works.

Cream
Strange Brew
Formed in 1966, Cream was the first top group to exploit the power-trio format, laying the foundation for much blues-rock and hard rock of the 1960s and 70s. Of the trio (Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton), Clapton had the biggest reputation. With ‘Strange Brew’, the musicians broke free from the confines of the standard Rock / R&B / Blues influence, in a unit that would allow them greater instrumental and improvisation freedom. It’s as funky a take on the blues, and shows how they took an American-born concept… and made it their own. One of Cream’s best ever!
Canned Heat
On The Road Again
Formed by Alan Wilson and Bob`the bear’ Hite, the band seemed tobe on the right track, but neverfound a lasting audience. `On theroad again’ was released as a singlein 1968. With his knowledge ofEastern music, Wilson used a`tambura drone’ to give the song ahypnotic effect and a psychedelicedge. It is also memorable for itsharmonica solo, which has amysterious note that is notplayable without an Overblow. Theresult is terrific!
The Eagles
Journey Of The Sorcerer
Choosing a good Eagles song is like picking a needle from a haystack. Of the contemporary hits this band has produced, the instrumental ‘Journey of the Sorcerer’ took on a new significance, because of the sci-fi sounding, banjo-based solo, done by the brilliant Bernie Leadon. It has a much closer feel than the rest in the album ‘One Of These Nights’.
Grateful Dead
Terrapin Station
Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era’s most beloved musical ambassadors, and its most enduring survivors. The roots of Grateful Dead lie with singer-song writer Jerry Garcia, a long-time blue grass enthusiast. Though ‘Terrapin Station’ was considered a major departure from the more jazz-blues and traditional folk styles used by the Dead, it still had these elements. The track was more like a symphony.
