Fox History & Entertainment, Saturdays, 8 p.m.

This is the story of how Emperor Constantine brought Christianity to the Western world. This film charts the key turning point in his reign – from the mysterious sign in the sky that led him to paint Christian symbols on the shields of his army, to his final victory over his rivals. It explores how his adoption of Christianity put him on a collision course with the forces of tradition, leading to a savage civil war. It also shows how he ultimately used Christianity to unite people across the empire – but also how Christianity used him to establish itself.

Back after Black

The Hindu :

Ayesha Kapur’s a teen with her own brand of fashion accessories

GRAND BRAND Ayesha’s artworks

Ayesha Kapur, the little girl who bagged many awards for her stellar performance in “Black” is now a teen with her own brand of fashion accessories called ‘Ayesha’.

It’s not every day that you come across a 14-year-old entrepreneur. But then, Ayesha Kapur is no ordinary teen.

With Dilip Kapur (who owns Hidesign) for a father and Jacqueline Kapur (who runs the Casablanca stores) for a mother, getting into the fashion business seems like the most natural thing.

Ayesha always travelled with her mother to pick up stuff for Casablanca.

Says Ayesha: “We realised we could use Indian tradition, give it a modern twist, and make it a brand,”

“Every girl has a shopper inside her, and ‘Ayesha’ hopes to let her discover that,” says the ninth grader who’s a self-confessed “mood-dresser”.

Accessories include neckpieces, bags, hair clips and bangles, and are mostly designed by the mother-daughter duo.

Ayesha’s right now excited about her forthcoming flick “Sikandar” with Parzan Dastur, who famously counted the stars in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”.

Beyond Lola

The Hindu :

Anuradha Menon a.k.a Lola Kutty talks about Lola, female comediennes and her future

PHOTO: NAGARA GOPALLola magic Anuradha Menon makes her film debut

Like a true star she shows up more than an hour late for the interview. Anuradha Menon, who is probably better known for her beauty on duty alter ego Lola Kutty on Channel V, more than makes up for her tardiness with her open, intelligent and forthcoming answers.

In true Lola style, Jasmine flowers adorn her curly hair; she glitters in gold jewellery and wears a sari in green and gold. But without her trademark Malayalam accent and glasses, talking to her, she seems more Anu and less Lola. She calls her fans “really sweet people” and reveals that it was very exciting when she got her first hate mail in five years a few months ago.

Not that it could be called a hate mail as the writer very graciously “hoped god would forgive her.”

Veering away from Lola and moving towards Anu she discloses that Alex’s real name is Basil Alex and the reason that he never talks on the show is because he doesn’t know a word of Malayalam and is East Indian.

Anu is one of the few women in India who is not afraid to be funny and quirky. Speaking on the lack of female comediennes in our country she says, “A man can get away with being quirky and looking funny,” she also adds that, “a funny woman is not seen as heroine material.” According to her a funny woman is portrayed in films as fat, loud and unattractive and always chasing the hero. She says women are expected to look perfect all the time, which has very few women then going in for comic roles.

Anu is also stepping away from her Lola Kutty persona with an upcoming role in Pritish Nandy Communication’s “Raat…More

Reading the fine print

The Hindu : y>Prakash Aswani’s penchant for art prints led him to start an online store, finds AYESHA MATTHAN

PHOTO: MURALI KUMAR K.ART LOVERS’ DELIGHT Prakash Aswani loves being surrounded by art. He fancies prints from Renoir to Picasso

Prakash Aswani was always interested in the arts — be it music, theatre or fine arts. “I had a music shop called Music Magic and I used to be a radio jockey on Radio Indigo. Since I loved classic rock music from the 70s, I used to insiston playing music only from that period. So I used to play everything from Crosby, Stills and Nash to Bad Company.”

Prakash is also a part of a theatre group called Gnatak. “We have been performing plays since ’82. Plays with real scenarios interest me, like those of Athol Fugard and Yasmina Reza.”

“Earlier in Bangalore, we just had Bangalore Little Theatre, Abhinay and Gnatak. It was either English or Kannada theatre then, and now we see more regional theatre like Bengali. Theatre in Bangalore is still chugging along, but I cannot see myself doing Neil Simon plays.”

Prakash recently directed “Art” by French playwright Yasmina Reza for a theatre festival in Bangalore. “Sean Connery watched the play in Paris and produced it in London with an English translation.”

Prakash admits it is difficult to make a living out of theatre. “Along the way, people went into regular jobs and family.” Five years ago, Prakash came across a publication in the US that primarily makes prints of fine art originals.

“I have always been fascinated by art and found that print-makers go to all the international museums of the world from the Louvre to the National Gallery in London and pay artists or the museums a sum of money to be able to produce prints.” This way, the artist continuously earns from their work.

“These prints are of fine colour accuracy and printed on high…More
