The Hindu :
It’s better to make music than war. And making live music and listening to it is thoroughly energising. Listen up, because tomorrow is World Music Day
Photo: Sampath Kumar g.p.FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC Rock on
Traditionally, Fete De La Musique aka World Music Day falls on June 21, marking the summer solstice. With the festival’s roots in France, free concerts are held all over the world, uniting several genres under one roof. People take to the streets, making merry music or should we say music merry? Most importantly, the young and old, musicians — amateur and professional, are meant to give their time for free without the pressures of playing for money’s worth. The quintessential question
So do we really need a day to celebrate music? It is probably most relevant where live music culture is restricted by laws and cut-off timings that don’t let the daylight sink in. Gone are the days when one could be feathered by sound from dusk to dawn. The show starts and ends at a specific time, revolving in extreme punctuality, often leaving the performing artists with no time for a proper sound check, or even getting a tolerable mix on stage.
Live music. Why does it tick? In a beautiful moment, the artist and listener become one. Personal boundaries melt, feet start tapping, and people hold hands to sing in harmony. Dancing begins. Ryan, a full-time musician says: “Since it’s a gathering of people, there is an exchange of energy. If you do it for the right reasons, you can make a difference in someone’s life. And because you’re having a good time yourself, it’s a real celebration.”
Before copyrights hit you in the face, pre-amplifiers, pre-electric guitars and pre-hair do’s-to-suit-the-occasion, there was just music, right? Ronald, a regular concert goer says, “I like going for live gigs simply to get entertained. Not to sit down and…More

The Hindu : y>Mother-daughter duo designers Chandra and Neeta make saris attractive for the younger generation, finds SHILPA SEBASTIAN R.
Photo: Sampath Kumar G. P.DARING DESIGNS Giving saris a new twist
Chandra and her daughter Neeta are like the two sides of a coin. The two not only breathe and design saris but also drape themselves in their own designs. They have a flair for combining the traditional with the modern and get younger women to try the sari.
While the mother is the creative head, the daughter takes care of all the marketing and publicity. They seem to have a perfect understanding. Even while speaking, if one gets stuck at a point, the other will come to the rescue and complete the sentence. Together, they are a big hit, and so is their boutique – Sakhi by Chandras – in Indiranagar. The beginning
“Though this boutique is four years old, my mother started the Chandra’s collection at home 10 years ago,” starts Neeta.
“I only designed saris, for they are interesting. Initially, I would make my own saris. One day while I was shopping, a lady followed me for almost half an hour before she came up and asked me where I bought my sari. That made me feel good and I started creating something for family and friends,” recalls Chandra.
Though they are now based in Bangalore the design story has its beginnings in Delhi. “We would come down here once a year and I remember mom would create something exclusive for all her friends and relatives here. She would meticulously prepare all her gifts. It was remarkable to see the amount of time and energy she would invest into every gift. Our coming to Bangalore would be more like a ritual and there would be something exclusive for everyone,” recalls Neeta.
The family later on shifted base to Bangalore in 1992. “My husband got busy with…More
