At home in incredible India

The Hindu :

Sri Lankan Dilshant Karunaratne is in awe of India and its fascinating mix of vibrant cultures

“I come from Sri Lanka, educated in Australia and live in incredible India,” is how he introduces himself — Dilshant Karunaratne, executive director of Salon Nayana at Indira Nagar.

When he was 16, he moved to Sydney and pursued his studies. Ten years later he comes to India, sets up his beauty salon, and falls in love with the place. “India is going places. It is a great place to be in. My mom runs salons in Sri Lanka. I wanted to branch out and start something on my own and the only choice was India,” he adds. He runs two salons in Bangalore and one in Chennai.Fascinating

The youngster says diverse cultures, fantastic landscapes and variety in cuisines are some of the fascinating things about India. “In Sri Lanka, it is just one culture. Towards North we have Tamil culture. We have an island mentality and a laidback attitude. But here, it is so competitive, you have to be on your toes all the time and you start loving it.”

He finds similarities between the cultures of India and Sri Lanka. “The way parents think, joint family set up, respect for elders and of course we love to buy gold and land (that’s what my grandmother used to tell us),” he says with a smile.

He speaks Sinhalese, English, Tamil and a little bit of Kannada. Language, he says, is not a barrier when it comes to connecting with clients. “We have established our brand here and maintain long-term relationships,” he adds.

Salon Nayana specialises in hair care, beauty care and nail art. His hair stylists, a network of 20 of them visit Malaysia and London twice a year to spot new trends, participate in international championships on hair styling such as…More

Leaps of discovery

The Hindu : y>Vyjayanthi Kashi started as a reluctant dancer but is now merged with it. She tells SHILPA SEBASTIAN R.that Kuchipudi gels with her personality

Photo: Murali Kumar K.GRADUAL ACCEPTANCEVyjayanthi Kashi: ‘For me it’s a complete art form’

“My father was so charmed by actor-dancer, Vyjayanthimala Bali that he decided to name me after her. My parents even decided to make me a dancer before I was born,” starts Kuchipudi dancer Vyjayanthi Kashi, whose name is synonymous with Kuchipudi today.

She gives complete credit to her parents – the late J.M.Vishwanth and G.V. Girijamma — also the daughter of Gubbi Veeranna for her fame. Vyjayanthi started learning Bharatanatya from Ramannaof Tumkur at the age of six. “I was immature and it was hard on me. I did not understand the seriousness of art. I would pinch my guru or run away and hide. Some days I would climb a tree and hide in the branches and watch him leave after a long wait. But he was so patient that he would teach me in spite of this. My advice to parents is not to pressurise their children.”

Eventually, she topped the State with a first rank and also won a golden chain. In spite of all the support, she says, she waited for a chance to get rid of her dance. “In college I took to theatre and worked with Nagabharana, which was a good change. It was in the evenings and there was no dance. That’s also where I met my husband Vijay Kashi,” recalls Vyjayanthi, who then went on to take up a job with a bank.

“During this time Vijay got busy with art films and theatre and I felt lonely. Vijay asked me to do something in my free time. At that point Kuchipudi guru C.R. Acharya was in town. It became the turning point in my life. I started dancing again,” she…More

Green tea’s antioxidant propertiesprotect the heart. The active ingredient in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), also helps to burn fat by inhibiting the breakdown of hormone norepinephrine. Studies have now shown that it can help sportspersonsrecover from toughworkouts. Researchers at Baylor University tested the effects of 1,200 mg of EGCG every day for two weeks on men training to exhaustion on leg exercises. Test subjects showed reduced muscle breakdown and recovered faster compared to the placebo group. Researchers recommend that sportspersons take supplements that provide 500 mg of green tea extract per serving, which is 50 per cent EGCG. Taking two servings twice a day is a better choice because one cannot drink that much green tea, they add. The body absorbs EGCG better when it comes in supplement form.
