Perhaps theyardstick for finding out how safe or likeable Bangalore is lies in what its children think of it. Sixty-six per cent of the children surveyed on how child-friendly this city is feel like they are not safe when they go out alone.Wide survey

Spread across private and public schools, the 30-question survey, revealed what 3149 children from private schools and 1246 children from government schools, who were surveyed through October and November, thought of the city.

Vrunda Bhaskar, National Coordinator, CMCA, said, “The survey was to articulate the children’s perceptions and to stimulate our government and civil society to seriously address the concept of child-friendly cities.”The children said,“We are called the future citizens. We prefer being called junior citizens. We are as much a part of the city we live in, as adults are,” echoed a majority of the children. Among the things they like about Bangalore, good schools and colleges topped the list. Birds, greenery, good IT job opportunities, good climate, parks, malls and theatres. They did not like traffic jams, bad roads, garbage, spitting and urinating on the road, and air and noise pollution.

Their wish list for the Chief Minister’s attention contained all the points of dislike. Sudhakar Rao, Chief Secretary and A. Ravindra, Former Chief Secretary, presided.
