The slaying of Benazir comes across as a major blow to the millions of people in the sub-continent who have grown sentimentally attached to the four most charismatic and illustrious families in South Asia. The Nehru-Gandhi family, the Bhutto family, the Sheikh Muzib-ur-Rehman and the Kumaratunga- Bhandaranaike family are there, right in the Top bracket, when there is any mention of the political elite of this part of the world. All members of these families were feted and felicitated when alive and mourned collectively by the nation when any of its members met a violent death.
These families have been eulogized in their countries so much that they have become synonymous with their countries to the outside world. Read more »

Since Pepsi and Coke are now being banned in most states and also in schools and offices, the soft drink companies have started selling the colas to farmers. Farmers are using these colas as pesticides and spraying them indiscriminately in their fields, causing greater concern for environmentalists. Over indulgent mothers are now worried that children will start eating more vegetables and consume coke clandestinely through natural means. Read more »

My mother used purdah. She wore a burqa with a net cover in front of the face. It reminded me of the meatsafes in my grandmother’s house. One had a net door made of cloth, the other of metal. But the objective was the same: keeping the meat safe. My mother was put under a burqa by her conservative family.
They told her that wearing a burqa would mean obeying Allah. And if you obey Allah, He would be happy with you and not let you burn in hellfire. My mother was afraid of Allah and also of her own father. He would threaten her with grave consequences if she didn’t wear the burqa. Read more »

People who we don’t know massacred people who we do. And they did so with contemptuous glee.” Then he broke down and wept. Read more »

Today there were serial blasts in over 6 trains(and one station, a total of 7 blasts) in Mumbai city. The time the bombs detonated was 6:00 pm, which is the time the trains are full as office goers return home. The timing was bang on target, maximum bodies in a minimum time frame. I’ve traveled Mumbai trains in peak hours and people barely get space to stand. A bomb exploding in such a confined place would definitely do it’s job. Read more »
